Yes! The style of orthotic is determined by the condition being treated as well as the footwear being worn.
Orthotics designed for athletic footwear should be easily transferable across most of your athletic footwear, however, you may run into difficulty with dressier footwear. Orthotics made for dress shoes are generally made narrower and have a thinner profile to improve shoe fit.
Our advice, especially for first time orthotic users, is to focus on the footwear that you are most active in.
Your initial orthotic assessment will take around 45 minutes. During this assessment we go through your medical history, previous treatments and orthotic use, footwear analysis, and a biomechanical and gait analysis. We then create your treatment plan, which can include anything from a footwear change, orthotic use, compression therapy, bracing, physiotherapy, and at-home remedies.
Quite often there are multiple treatment options available that can be used to improve your symptoms. It is our goal to help you understand these options so that you can feel comfortable and confident in making your treatment decisions.
Generally, orthotics take two weeks to be made. At your pick up appointment we trim your orthotics to your footwear and ensure they have a good contour to your feet.
Once you start wearing your orthotics you will go through a break in period of getting used to them. This break in period is different for everyone. Some patients can wear their orthotics comfortably full time right away, while other patients need to start more slowly. This means wearing your orthotics for one to two hours the first day and adding an extra hour or two of wear each following day.
Yes! There are many adjustments that can be made to your orthotics. Adjustments can be made to improve shoe fit, increase overall comfort, or be modified to help treat functional issues that have developed.
If everything is working well and you are comfortable with your orthotics, we like to have annual checkups to make sure the orthotics remain properly contoured to your feet and make any necessary adjustments or repairs. However, we are always available for reassessments and checkups throughout the year, if necessary.
